Evening services on Shields Ferry are set to resume from next month

Evening services on the Shields Ferry are to be restored from next month.

Operators of the cross-Tyne service, Nexus, said they plan to restore a full schedule from Monday, March 7.

Evening services had previously been axed amid the spread of the Omicron variant of Covid-19.

Nexus Director of Customer Service, Huw Lewis, said: “I am grateful to customers for supporting us and I am happy to say that we are looking to get our full schedule back into service from March 7.

“We initially withdrew these services to protect resources from the spread of the more contagious omicron variant of Covid-19.

“We then faced a problem of crew availability. It takes time to train a new ferry operator as they have to go through a rigorous course in order to obtain the boat captain’s license.”

Nexus confirmed that new recruits must undergo rigorous training and testing with the Maritime Agency and the Coast Guard in order to obtain a license to operate the ferry.

The Shields Ferry, a frequent and fast service on the River Tyne from South Shields to North Shields on the other side in just seven minutes.

“We are on the right track to train our new recruits and this will allow us to find the full schedule before the busy spring and summer seasons.

“Reducing services was the last thing we wanted to do, but it was necessary while we restore full crew availability and a full roster.”

For now, Shields Ferry timetables will continue with the first crossing of the day still at 6.45am, Monday to Saturday. The last crossings will be at 5:45 p.m. from South Shields and at 6 p.m. from North Shields.

The Sunday ferry schedule does not change and services will continue to end at 6 p.m.
