Free public transport for Wellingtonians at Christmas and New Years

Metlink offers free travel to passengers traveling on all Wellington bus and train services on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and New Years Day.

Bus passengers can get on and off for free with their Snapper, including on the Johnsonville line. Those who visit or without a Snapper card simply need to inform the driver of their destination and will receive a $ 0 ticket.

Christmas Eve trains and buses will run on their regular weekday schedules.

On Christmas Day, buses will run on a standard Sunday schedule in Wellington City, Hutt Valley, Porirua and Kāpiti, and Route 200 in Wairarapa on a special schedule.

Trains on the Johnsonville and Hutt Valley lines will operate on standard Sunday schedules. There will be no Melling or Wairarapa Line services. The Kāpiti line will be replaced by buses.

On New Year’s Eve, buses will run on a standard Saturday schedule in Wellington City, Hutt Valley, Porirua and Kāpiti and on a special schedule in Wairarapa.

Johnsonville, Hutt Valley and Wairarapa line trains will operate on standard Saturday schedules. The Melling Line will operate hourly from 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. The Kāpiti line will be replaced by buses.

East by West ferries are not included.

Metlink chief executive Scott Gallacher said the inclusion of Christmas Eve was a move to make roads safer on one of the busiest days of the year.

“Free trips on Metlink services mean people can return home safely and stress-free before the special day or even on a last-minute gift-hunting assignment in stores. “
