Municipal transit receives major financial boost across province

Municipal transit across the province received a $375 million boost through the gas tax program.

This boost was announced by Caroline Mulroney, Minister of Transportation last week, and will help 109 municipalities operate and expand public transit.

“Our government is committed to helping municipalities maintain and improve public transit across the province,” said Caroline Mulroney, Minister of Transportation. “Supporting public transit systems is more important than ever as municipalities across Ontario grapple with the COVID-19 pandemic. This funding will help ensure people have access to safe and reliable transportation to get to work or pick up essential items like a prescription.

Funding can be used to extend hours of service, purchase transit vehicles, add routes, improve accessibility or upgrade infrastructure.

The exact total of Gas Tax Program funding is calculated based on the number of liters of gasoline sold in the province in the previous year.

“Our government knows that supporting transit systems is more important than ever as communities struggle to maintain service levels during COVID-19,” said Greg Rickford, MPP for Kenora—Rainy River. . “That’s why we’ve increased the gas tax this year. financing to compensate for the drop in sales at the pump.

Municipalities that support transit services in their community receive two cents per liter of revenue from the provincial gas tax collected.

The 109 municipalities that receive funding through the Gas Tax Program provide public transit services to 144 communities representing more than 92% of Ontario’s total population.
