Rail Baltica Latvia sign for the design of the construction of regional stations

RERE INECO, a Latvian-Spanish business association, will develop the construction plans for the Latvian stations of the new Rail Baltica high-speed railway. Eiropas Dzelzceļa līnijas, the national implementing body of Rail Baltica in Latvia, and RERE INECO signed the 3.6 million cooperation agreement on November 4.

Rail Baltica is a high-speed cross-border rail project designed to connect the Baltic States, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania, as well as the wider European rail network. “Regional traffic and mobility points will become an essential part of Rail Baltica,” said Kitija Gruškevica, head of the Latvian branch of RB Rail AS. The Rail Baltica railway system is designed in such a way that it can provide cross-border traffic of regional trains, thus enabling the connection of border regions in Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia.

The design work should be completed by the end of 2023, so that the construction of the regional stations can start in 2024, Kaspars Vingris, chairman of the board of directors of Eiropas Dzelzceļa līnijas, told the news agency. THE YOUR. He also said that the regional stations will be built by the same builder who won the contract to build the main line.

Efficient transfer to international trains

Regional trains of the Rail Baltica line will stop at both international stations and regional stops and reach speeds of up to 200 kilometers per hour. The aim is also to ensure an efficient transfer to international trains. As part of the design, 16 stations called “mobility points” are planned on the Rail Baltica main line in Latvia. Regional mobility points should bring together different modes of transport, such as rail, national and municipal buses, private vehicles and electric vehicles, scooters, bicycles and other micro-mobility tools. The station will consist of “nearly zero-emission” buildings, the construction of which will meet the highest environmental requirements.

“With the introduction of Rail Baltica, a disruption in mobility habits is expected,” Vingris said. According to him, as soon as the Rail Baltica regional trains start running, people will no longer have to adapt by choosing their places of residence at a distance closer to the center or Riga or their own surroundings. “For example, the surroundings near Bauska or Salacgrīva will be an equally good location as the place of residence, and the place of work will be accessible quickly and easily. In addition, opportunities to create new jobs in the regions or even to work in neighboring countries, for example in Kaunas or Parnu, will be provided,” he said.

Latvian-Spanish cooperation

The Latvian group RERE, in partnership with the construction company BERERIX, is already working on the construction of the Rail Baltica Riga central station with Belgian and Italian colleagues. “By combining global and local experience in the right synergy, with the delivery organizations of the Rail Baltica project, we will be able to assign specific volumes and shapes to the points currently marked on the map,” he said. she adds.

The Spanish company Ineco, involved worldwide in the design of transport infrastructure, noted that “the company is already actively involved in the Rail Baltica project and is ready to contribute further with its international knowledge to develop the design of the construction from the regional station”.
