Frustrated with the lack of public transport, commuters demand that all buses operated by the Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation (TNSTC) stop at Gandhi Nagar Bus Terminal in Kannamangalam, a Panchayat town on the main Vellore – Tiruvannamalai road . Currently, only one government city bus service is operated between Kannamangalam town and Polur in Tiruvannamalai district. Private buses do not stop at the city bus terminus. As a result, commuters including students, women and the elderly have to depend on a single city bus service to reach Vellore, Katpadi, Polur, Arcot and Walajah. “The city bus is crowded and students, women and the elderly find it difficult to get on the bus during rush hour. We need all buses including private buses to stop at major city bus stops,” said Kannamangalam commuter K. Sekar. Residents became agitated after a student fell from a crowded TNSTC bus near Gandhi Nagar Junction in Kannamangalam a few days ago. Commuters blocked the main Vellore – Tiruvannamalai road to highlight their plight. Tax and transport officials and the police pacified them. However, the crowd dispersed only after obtaining a written assurance from K. Srinivasan, Director, TNSTC, that all buses will stop in the city, including at the bus terminus. Kannamangalam is a border town connecting three districts. Although many buses run on the route, they do not stop at the main bus stops and the city terminus. As a result, many residents depend on two-wheelers to get to work, schools and hospitals. With schools and colleges reopening due to the easing of lockdown restrictions, students make up a large portion of the city’s commuters. Apart from Kannamangalam town, nearby villages like Periyaayyampalayam, Chinnaayyampalayam, Somanthangal, Ekambaranallur, Santhavasal and Than Malaipattu depend on bus services to Kannamangalam to reach Vellore. In fact, Government Medical College Hospital in Adukkamparai near Vellore is close to Kannamangalam. As a result, many outpatients and their relatives in the city depend on bus services to get to the public hospital.
