Revised rules for e-bikes and e-scooters on GO trains in Mississauga, Brampton and Hamilton

The provincial transit agency that runs GO Transit is revising the rules for e-bikes and electric scooters as it prepares to increase ridership as more people return to work.

Metrolinx issued a missive on Friday that clarified which e-bikes and electric scooters can be allowed on board transit vehicles and at stations. Essentially, e-bikes and e-scooters are allowed on GO trains and buses, but are prohibited on the UP Express, the commuter train line that connects Pearson International Airport to Mississauga and Union Station downtown. city ​​of Toronto.

There is also a set of exceptions for electric bikes:

  • When traveling by GO bus, customers will need to attach their e-bikes to the bicycle rack at the front of the bus. Only e-bikes with a maximum weight of 25 kilograms can be transported in the bicycle rack. Folding electric bikes will be permitted on double-decker buses.
  • Passengers cannot take e-bikes on trains arriving at Union Station during rush hour between 6:30 a.m. and 9:30 a.m., or on trains leaving Union Station between 3:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m., from Monday to Friday. in line with GO’s cycling policy.
  • Bike stickers on GO train cars show where to get on an electric bicycle or electric scooter.
  • It is forbidden for runners to park their vehicle in the accessible coach. Customers are also asked not to charge their bikes on GO trains.
  • Like regular bikes, e-bikes are not allowed on UP Express trains at any time due to the limited storage space available. Storage is currently a priority for people using wheelchairs and other mobility devices.
  • Electric bikes that look like mopeds, scooters, or motorcycles cannot be carried on GO trains or buses. Customers can park them in parking spaces for motorcycles or ordinary vehicles.
